Deconstructivism
literally translates into “breaking down”, this style of architecture does not
follow the rules of classical architecture. This style appeared in the 1980s
and was a part of Post Modern Architecture. This style is characterised by the
absence of harmony, continuity and symmetry. Deconstructivism views
architecture in bits and pieces has no visual logic and appears to be made up
of abstract forms. During the First World War, Russian Constructivists broke
rules of classical architecture and composition and presented drawings that
defied the geometric norms of that time, which in turn opened the eyes of
people on the endless possibilities of breaking architectural rules.
CHARACTERISTICS
DECONSTRUCTIVISM
·
Surface
manipulation and fragmentation
·
Non-rectilinear
shapes
·
Distortion
and dislocation of architectural conventions concerning structure and envelope
·
Elements
are not in harmony and continuity
EXAMPLES
POSTMODERNISM
·
Reject
boundaries between high and low forms of art
·
Incorporate
stylist references- often playful and symbolic
·
Apply
elements and structural forms from classical architecture to modern designs
·
Refusal
to draw inspiration from a single source
·
Highly
decorative and metamorphic in nature
EXAMPLES
In conclusion, we can say that both the architectural styles are defiant of
Modern Architecture and both broke the rules of classical architecture.
Moreover, Deconstructivism is just a part of Post Modern Movement, just a more the non-harmonious and abstract form of architecture.
